Do not pack your Unaccompanied Personal Effects (UPE) in non-laminated wooden boxes (chipboard) or use unsuitable packaging such as torn/flimsy/light plastic, as these materials can easily be dislodged or broken in transit. Loose polystyrene chips, balls or compressed polystyrene boxes must not be used for packing material, as these are an environmental hazard. Expeditioners should ensure all UPE items are packaged appropriately for road/air/sea transport before personal effects are sent to the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). The following steps are recommended:

  1. Pack UPE items in sturdy cartons or strong plastic bins.
  2. Each piece should not exceed 15 kg.
  3. Clearly mark each piece with expeditioner name, contact number, flight/voyage, and station name and item number e.g. 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc.

Note: When expeditioners attend their kitting appointment at the AAD Expeditioner Clothing Store, they will be issued with AAD clothing. Some of this clothing will be placed into an AAD transport survival bag, and the remaining items will need to be taken as accompanied personal effects OR consigned in Econ as personal effects (this will depend on the role you are performing and the duration of your stay).

Any AAD issued items that will be sent as personal effects cargo, can be consigned in Econ after a kitting appointment.
