Yesterday, the wintering team of Macquarie Isl. expeditioners gathered outside the Ham Shack above station to send us off, some bright orange outfits keeping them in sight as the outline of the isthmus began to creep behind a veil of sea mist.
Once departed, the ship travelled south down the east coast on the leeward side of the island. For those expeditioners from Macca aboard the ship it was an opportunity to revisit their travels down island as one by one, the field huts and favoured walking spots and sights passed before them. A number continued to brave the bracing head wind on the external observation deck.. leaning into it with their cameras aloft to capture the sea birds and rugged coastline as we rounded the southern tip of the Island. Our plan to cruise North within view of the west coast of the Island was curtailed in part by increased cloud.. but we did get a look at it all the same. With seas building towards 8 mts it was time for some of us to return to our cabins and discover what hadn't been well stowed. For others an engine-room tour or another round in the never-ending shipboard ping pong tournament.
A disturbed sleep overnight for many due to the sea state. This afternoon debriefing sessions commence in earnest as we review the resupply operation and seek to capture lessons learnt from the perspectives of those involved.
Regards,
James and Brendan.
