If Saturday is 'Bacon Day' for Deputy Voyage Leaders, Today is 'Safety Sunday'. Post the morning bridge meeting, crew of the RSV Nuyina donned personal protective gear and peeled off in groups to conduct routine safety and hazard checks around the vessel. In tow, were members of the White Sparks Pictures team diligently and unobtrusively filming the rounds of the ship. Aside from a brief supervisory meeting held amongst the AAD workgroup supervisors – there were few formal engagements this morning. Watercraft operators reclining on the observation deck discussed world affairs and when the hour arose, undertook further buoy deployments or joined in with other expeditioners for galley duties including dish washing and food preparation. Jeff, the coordinator of the 'Ice Berg Sweep' counted the take on the sweep thus far, whilst preliminary rounds of the V5 table tennis tournament began in earnest with some early upsets in the rankings. After lunch, a briefing was held with expeditioners who have volunteered for roles on the incident management team (IMT). The IMT template itself is a generic framework of roles and lines of communication which can be quickly adapted to suit a variety of different emergency scenarios , drawing on the established skills, knowledge and experience of expeditioners aboard across medical, search & rescue (SAR) . fire fighting and incident management . As always , the process of developing the IMT impresses upon us the extraordinary variety of secondary skill sets and lived experience amongst expeditioners on this voyage.

On a related note, our expeditioner team comprises of representatives from a variety of government agencies beyond just the AAD; Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Meteorology and ARPANSA to name but a few. Of the latter, we are grateful to Sandra for sharing an outline of her project scope with us: `The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is involved in two projects in conjunction with the AAD: (1). The measurement of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) at the Australian Antarctic station, (2) the installation, operation and maintenance of radionuclide monitoring stations as part of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) global monitoring network. On this voyage, ARPANSA's role will be to conduct maintenance activities related to these two monitoring stations on Macquarie Island.'
