Yesterday evening the RSV Nuyina departed No. 1 Anchorage for Davis Station. With all voyage critical equipment aboard, the approval was given to commence our Southward passage. After an extended wait period, expeditioners and crew alike enjoyed the sensation of forward motion as the ship glided out of Storm Bay, escorted by a pod of dolphins. . People gathered on the heli-deck and upper external decks of the ship to watch the Tasmanian coastline recede into the distance with the fading light.
Since then our progress has remained steady despite encountering a sizeable cold weather front and with it a decent sized swell, reinforcing to some the necessity of carefully securing cabins, light meals and, as required, sea sickness medications. Today, planning sessions continue at a deliberate pace whilst the majority of our team settle into a ship-board routine punctuated by meal times and exercise around the currently windblown outer decks.
Our colleagues in Tas Parks have continued their biosecurity checks supported by ship's crew and a schedule of broader resupply briefings is currently being drafted.
Having now concluded the requisite COVID-19 enhanced preventative measures for 3 days post-departure from Macquarie Wharf, we are enjoying the increased freedom of movement and the prospect of recreational activities led by our social scout Dr Dane. Movie nights, table tennis comps, ice berg spotting competitions and group fitness sessions are all being lined up.
