This morning we are south of the Browning Peninsula having found the colder air we were seeking in front of the spectacular Vanderford Glacier. It's not that cold by local standards (it's only -4 degrees) but the glacier is funnelling all that cold Antarctic plateau air on to us like a gigantic cooling fan. It all helps our cold weather testing of our fire suppression system.
We are taking the opportunity to test the multibeam by surveying the area in front of the glacier which has never been properly mapped before. And what have we found?
The answer is.. wonderful things. Both above and below the surface.
We briefly spotted a pod of orcas this morning who undoubtedly knew all the secrets of this place long before we got here. We are currently deploying a CTD, and despite being in mostly open water, an annoying piece of ice keeps following us around. Doesn't it know who we are?
