With our arrival at Macquarie Island expected at 8.00am this morning, many of our expeditioners were up bright and early, eager to catch their first glimpse of the island that will become their home for the next year. The early morning sun bathing the cliffs of the island provided a great opportunity for the photographers amongst us.
Refuelling Supervisor Jeff took us through a very comprehensive briefing of the process of supplying fuel to the station for next year. This gave all involved in the refueling roster a thorough understanding of their roles so that this critical operation can be conducted safely.
We had planned to commence the first of our operations in the afternoon and the Watercraft Team prepared our LARC for deployment. Unfortunately not long after beginning we were forced to cancel ops for the afternoon as the wind and sea conditions exceeded our safe operating parameters. The forecast for tomorrow promises to bring better conditions and we are looking forward to installing the 76th ANARE in their island home.
