Comments

The Southern Ocean has been throwing some of its legendary disdain for seafarers at the AIVIQ over the past 24h. The 45kt southerly winds accompanied by 4.5-5m swell create just the right amount of 'rock n roll' to make things uncomfortable for many.

The decks of the ship are quiet and this SITREP is taking twice as long as it should as I am regularly moved halfway across the room and then have to wait for the return roll to place me back within arm's reach of the keyboard.

Our Day 2 COVID PCR testing is today, a process that takes the doctors 16 hours to complete testing all passengers and crew. Arguably, quite a process in its own right but a significantly challenging undertaking in the current conditions.

We are expecting some reprieve tomorrow as winds ease overnight and the swell drops. We will use this lull in the weather to finalise a series of briefings including station orientation, biosecurity, watercraft transfer procedures and refueling in preparation for our arrival.

REGARDS: Simon and Matt
