The Main Lounge was packed last night for Dr Maddie's science talk. We learnt about her PhD on Antarctic worms and her more recent work with krill and whales in the Southern Ocean. We were a captive audience. There were many insightful questions about the discovery of new species and what the Southern Ocean science means for policy. It was awesome to hear how our whale and KOMBI moorings will impact CCAMLR decisions on fisheries and marine protected areas. There were also some less insightful questions, such as Anthony asking 'aren't krill just small prawns??'.

The ship rolled from side to side overnight and there were a few tired eyes appearing later than usual this morning. Because our bunks lie cross-ways, this side to side motion of the ship makes it hard to sleep. Your head and feet constantly go up and down and it is quite uncomfortable.

It is another quiet day on board. We continue working on reports and EPRs. Chief Mate Eric has organised a 'Champions' game of 500. Sam and George will play Bill and Pete. May the best team win. The real excitement of the day, however, is tonight's presentation. Mawson FTO Mark and Plumber Ducky will talk about their 12-day trip to Kloa; a remote Emperor Penguin Colony that had not been visited for 20 years.

REGARDS: Sam and Anthony
