Comments

The seas today are calm as we gently roll our way back to Hobart. We are still surrounded by icebergs, although none compare to the fantastic three-pillar iceberg that passed very close to the ship last night. We were all enjoying our evenings – 12 people were playing cards in the mess, another group were watching Ted Lasso in the lounge – when someone shouted 'wow look at that iceberg!'. There were certainly some who thought 'yeah yeah we have seen loads of icebergs', but any iceberg snobbiness was quickly forgotten. Most of the bergs we see are tabular-shaped in some way or another, with the occasional berg having a cool spikey section. But this berg was something different. It was made up of three massive pillars, each about 50m high, seemingly coming straight out of the ocean (the base of the berg was underwater). It passed by the ship relatively quickly (we are flying along at 10kts) and most of us went back to our activities. The few who were relaxing on the bridge, however, got the real show. As this incredible iceberg crossed our wake it suddenly disintegrated. It was so quick that those who weren't looking missed it. All that was left to see was a big plume of water and some sad-looking ice blocks bobbing along where the once-fantastic iceberg had floated.

In other news, people are getting stuck into report writing, the crew are gathering today for their weekly safety meeting, and there was brief but beautiful snow storm outside.
