We woke up today to gently rolling seas. The ship is noticeably busier as people emerge from their cabins. The Deck of Cards workout had 9 attendees, possibly the biggest yet for the season! But it looks like this is the 'calm before the storm'. We are expecting the seas to grow from Saturday into Sunday, peaking at around 7 metres.
Planning discussions are underway for refuelling and science. Voyage Leader Sam and Deputy Voyage Leader Anthony sat down earlier today with Refuelling Supervisor Jeff and Watercraft Coordinator Mick to run over refuelling operations at Mawson. Planning will continue next week after the big seas have passed. We also met with science lead Maddie to discuss the deployment and retrieval of KOMBI (Krill Observational Mooring for Benthic Investigation) moorings. These will happen closer to Mawson. It is quite an exciting operation, as they have only been deployed and retrieved once before. Other science projects for this voyage include the deployment of whale moorings and ARGO floats and the monitoring of sea ice.
Tonight, we will celebrate seven-time winterer Chris' birthday with freshly-baked chocolate cake and a film on the Isle of Man's famous TT race.
REGARDS: Sam and Anthony
