Comments

We are still on a NNE course that takes us to Fremantle and this morning we are travelling between Heard and McDonald Islands and Kerguelen Islands. Heard and Mcdonald Islands are sub-Antarctic islands located in the Southern Ocean about half way between Australia and South Africa. They have World Heritage protection and marine reserve status and are managed as part of the Australian Antarctic Territory. The islands were only discovered in the mid 19th century so are relatively pristine due to little impact from human activities.

Kerguelen Islands is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It was discovered in 1772 and later explored by Captain James Cook. It was often used by whalers and seal hunters and in 1950 a permanent base and scientific centre, Port-aux-Francais was established on the main island.

We have just completed three more safety drills. The first was an oil spill on the barge on deck, as clean up was being finalised there was a fire in the engine room so the crew donned BA equipment to control the fire. While this was occurring the air vents were being checked and we had a missing person. This highlighted that there may be more than one issue at a time and how easy it is to lose someone during busy situations. We all need to stay vigilant and have situational awareness - what is happening around us and keeping check on our fellow shipmates.

Cheers
Leanne and Jacob
