As happens in Antarctic we are at the mercy of the weather. Yesterday there were a number of activities planned in support of Voyage 6 of the Aiviq. The weather decided that this would not going to happen.
We had been stooging in longer circuits but in the morning we came closer to the entrance to Kista Strait and sailed around in smaller circles avoiding some of the bergy bits and growlers. We were waiting hoping that the winds would recede enough to put our barge in the water and transfer the ingoing winter team to shore from the Aiviq – alas we were not able to do this. In fact the winds did recede for a short while and then increased again even higher.
This morning we are once again waiting for the winds to recede. This is usual for Mawson where the katabatic winds come off the plateau in the morning then generally by late morning, early afternoon drop off. The forecast is for this to happen today and the coming days so we are hoping to transfer from the Aiviq , the winter team, their bags and cargo ashore.
Cheers
Leanne and Jacob
