We arrived at Mawson at noon yesterday. We went into Kista Strait to say hi to station and enable access to the station internet to download our emails, thank you Mawson. There are not many satellites down here so it can be difficult to get a strong enough signal to receive emails. After this was completed we headed out to open water in the local area. This ship does not have dynamic positioning (which enables the vessel to stay in the one spot without moving) and when there is no need to stay in the Strait the ship goes out into open water to stooge. Stooging means sailing up and down in open waters in a general pattern.
We are currently heading back toward Kista Strait as this afternoon the Mawson resupply team including the station leader will come out to the ship for a cargo resupply coordination meeting. These face to face meetings are invaluable in finalising details of operations planning and cargo management and movement. Plus it is always great to see friends.
When the Mawson team returns to station our DVL & Chief Officer will also go ashore and undertake the cargo compliance checks to ensure that the cargo is appropriately placarded, not damaged and paperwork matches. Adjustments to the manifest are then made if required. Also on this trip back to station will be all our watercraft operators and roundtripping personnel who will do station inductions. Inductions are to ensure that all personnel going on station understand the fire alarms, assembly points, where you are allowed to go and not go along with familiarisation of the station.
We are all eagerly looking forward to seeing the Aiviq join us soon when both voyages and station all work together to undertake safe and efficient dry cargo resupply and refuelling operations.
Cheers
Leanne and Jacob
