Yesterday afternoon we ticked off 100% delivery and backloading of Davis cargo. Thanks to the team at Davis and the teams (expeditioners and crew) on board the Happy Diamond.
We only had 10 loads of cargo to move from station to the ship and what was expected to occur before lunch but as can happen in Antarctica, the weather has other ideas. Flexibility is the name of the game and in true expeditioner & crew fashion we waited out the winds and swell which dropped quite quickly after lunch and we were able to complete the task. Finishing early also allowed the crew time to dismantle the pontoons and move some of Casey's RTA cargo to a different location on the hatches of the ship. All of these movements will make a more streamlined resupply at Mawson later in the week.
As I am writing this the camera download and maintenance boat trip is occurring. Two IRBs (rubber duckies) are sitting off Gardner Island waiting for the scientists to complete the task of changing out camera SD cards and undertaking any maintenance of the cameras that are required. They will then travel to Magnetic Island to do the same.
.
In the mean time a number of crew went ashore this morning for a tour of station as did a number of Davis personnel come to the ship for a tour. The same is occurring this afternoon. When everyone gets back to their respective locations we will load the watercraft back on board and depart for Mawson this evening at 6.30pm (10.30pm Hobart time).
Our ETA at Mawson is Thursday evening/Friday morning.
Adieu Davis, until next time.
Cheers
Leanne and Jacob
