Late yesterday afternoon the Voyage Management team had a planning meeting via teams with the Mawson Station Leaders (outgoing and ingoing) and cargo master to discuss some finer details of the Mawson resupply. We will continue to have meetings with them once we reach Davis as communications are very limited whilst in the Southern Ocean.

Then at 6.30pm the Captain gave the order to commence pulling in the anchors. Once they were off the bottom we slowly did a starboard turn with the bow of the ship facing the Red Shed (accommodation building), and with a sound of the horn to farewell Casey we continued to turn toward the entrance of Newcomb Bay. With one final blast of the horn we are off to Davis.

There is currently a thick fog surrounding us with visibility at about 50 metres. It is quite soothing with the gentle motion of the ship and the comforting sound of the engines as we make our way across the ocean.

As part of our preparation for arriving at Davis we have done our first time changes. Davis is 4 hours behind Hobart (and Casey) time and as we have an expected transit time of 5 days we turned our clocks back 1 hour at 7pm last night and 1 more hour at 6 am this morning. This made it easy – I turned my clock back 2 hours before going to bed and I was on the correct time when I woke. It is really useful that all cabins have clocks that are hard wired so when the time was changed on the bridge all of the clocks in the cabins also changed. With computers, watches and phones all having times on them it is useful to have true time reflected in your cabin.

Cheers
Leanne and Jacob
