A special day for the crew and expeditioners on the Happy Diamond. There was the opportunity for them to have a look around Newcomb Bay on the barge, Peter Gormly. They were treated to a closer inspection of several areas including a slightly closer look (not too close) at the crumbling ice that some of us have been watching since our arrival. There are also two people on board who were here last year on Happy Diamond's sister ship Happy Dragon, so they have been watching since then. The ice is all crumbling on itself so I do not believe any large chunks of ice will fall. The AAD have specified distances that are to be maintained from icebergs, birds, animals etc to ensure everyone remains safe and to protect this extraordinary environment and it's wildlife.
It was great they were able to be off the ship for a short while in the crisp cool air to see penguins and seals. Even though there is very little wind it is still pretty cold standing on the barge even though everyone was rugged up in Antarctic clothing.
I am sure that there were some treasured happy snaps taken. Thank you to our watercraft team who made this happen.
Cheers
