The temperature is dropping and the time has come to put a jacket on. Our travels are slightly rockier today than yesterday but should subside by later tonight. It is not enough to stop all expeditioners from being up and about. In preparation for our arrival at Casey in 4-5 days we started to get into our briefing program – todays briefing related to cargo operations including videos of past resupplies so those who have not been involved with a resupply have an idea of what to expect.
The Happy Diamond is the sister ship to the Happy Dragon which was used to undertake resupply operations for the Australian Antarctic Program last season. The Happy Diamond is a heavy lift cargo vessel with a 1A Finnish Ice class (I will leave that for you to look up) and built in 2011. Her overall length is 157m and breadth is 25m with a 10m draft and a maximum speed of 16 knots. She has two holds: 5032 m3 and 15,860 m3 and containers can also be stowed on top of the hatches that cover the two holds. This is a lot of cargo space.
Cheers,
Leanne and Jacob
