Despite having written yesterday that Sundays are generally quiet on the ship, the afternoon seemed to absolutely fly by. The Voyage Management office was packed with people discussing science operations, quiz night questions, and general life affairs. Sam and Anthony have a strict open-door policy, except for when the door is closed. There is almost always an extra person, or two or three, lounging in our reclining chairs. They are enticed inside by a delicious selection of chocolates and then normally trapped when Sam or Anthony realise they have an endless array of questions they need to ask that very person. Luckily it goes both ways and we always make time if someone comes to us with a question or concern.

Yesterday evening we celebrated another birthday. Chef Abbie produced the biggest carrot cake ever seen (it must have been almost a metre long). After we had our share of cake (and more), we made our way to the muster area for Round Two of the AIVIQ Grand Prix. Racing a car up and down a long corridor may sound easy, but we managed to prove otherwise. Despite some heavy blows and multiple flips upside down, both cars remain in one piece. The third and final round – the obstacle course - will take place later this week.

Today is another busy day. Field training is back on for the ingoing Mawson winterers. They are learning all about maps, compasses, and navigation. We will also deploy our first ARGO float this afternoon and cross 60 degrees in the evening. Planning continues for the Mawson refuel, resupply, and personnel changeover. Expeditioners do not know it yet, but tonight they will be grouped into teams and tasked with an AIVIQ scavenger hunt. They will have 24 hours to complete this before the Quiz Night tomorrow night. The points gathered from this scavenger hunt will be added to their final quiz tally.
