We arrived at Davis late last night but stayed out of the anchorage until this morning. It was a glorious morning sailing into Prydz Bay. As we slowly moved closer to Davis we could see the twinkling lights of the Happy Dragon. The sun was slowly rising over the plateau behind the Vestfold Hills and as it was doing so we started to make out the shapes of the station. Having summered at Davis twice I could readily identify the buildings as they came into view. As with all the Australian Antarctic stations they are coloured coded. It was pretty special seeing each building take shape with the lighter colours of the Operations and Science buildings and pale green of the main accommodation building appearing first and the darker coloured Mess/recreation and Bureau of Meteorology buildings appear as the sun rose.
One of the two AAD barges on board the Happy Dragon provided transport for the resupply team from the Aiviq to go to station to support the resupply. They will remain on shore until the completion of cargo operations.
I have an amazing office. I am writing the sitrep from the bridge of the Aiviq and when I scan the view I have Gardner Island on one side and Anchorage Island on the other and out the stern windows, not too far away icebergs of every size and shape. If I move to the front of the ship there is a great view of the Vestfold Hills and out of all windows I can see a number of smaller islands. It is a great vantage point for watching cargo operations occurring on the Happy Dragon which is about 450 metres away.
Cheers
