It is 5.30am and we are sailing along the West side of Iceberg Alley and it is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. I wish that videos and pictures could do it justice. It appears that we are moving slowly but we are doing 10 knots as we gracefully sail on our final approach to Mawson. There are icebergs as far as the eye can see and as the sun comes up it glistens off the water and highlights the different shapes, sizes and majesty of each one shaped.
The ingoing Mawson team are up and taking in the experience of their final few hours on the ship. A few killer whales ambled by in the distance and the mountains near Mawson are getting larger as we near. There are no words to explain the view as an adelie penguin sitting on a bergy bit sails past the ship, probably wondering what the big blue and white thing is. Surreal.
There is silence as everyone is trying to take in the enormity of what we are experiencing.
Picture perfect day – an absolute privilege to be here.
We arrive at Mawson at 8.26am this morning and are sitting on DP (Dynamic Positioning) in Kista Strait – outside Horseshoe Harbour
Cheers
