Yesterday the iceberg sweep competition began. A nice big chart drawn up providing hourly slots to enter you name in the hope that you know more than Mother Nature on when she will present us with the first sighting of an iceberg for this voyage.

Last night the deployment of the first of seven argo floats was successfully completed. The Captain expertly positioned the Aiviq to enable the crew to deploy the argo float over the side of the ship under the watchful eye of our Deputy Voyage Leader. The argo floats collect ocean temperature and salinity measurements to help understand how and why the Southern Ocean is changing. The observations will be used to assess changes in ocean heat content, sea level rise, ocean circulation, and ocean – ice interaction. The insights gained will help improve our understanding of the role of the Southern Ocean in the earth's climate system, as well as the consequences of Southern Ocean change for ecosystems and the cryosphere (sea ice and ice shelves). We have received confirmation that the argo float has successfully activated and has already sent data back to Australia.

Cheers
Leanne & Matt
