The forecast cold front arrived as scheduled with rain and wind. In anticipation, the AIVIQ crew have readied our room heaters to assist keep the chill outside. This is in addition to the network of heated exterior deck stairs, decks and rails throughout the ship.
The day also saw the second drill of the voyage, the first being an abandon ship when we were in the calm waters of the Derwent and today a simulated fire in the incinerator. The ship will also commence the transition to Davis Station time zone (+7) and will retard to clocks one-hour 2200 – 2100 tonight.
Today also marks the 24th birthday of our youngest expeditioner onboard. Sam, thinking that her secret was safe, was completely surprised by a series of greeting throughout the day of "happy birthday ma'am" from the AIVIQ crew. Tonight, the celebrations continue with a favourite cake, a few small presents and some games – Sam has warmed to the idea that this may be the first of many birthdays spent in the Southern Ocean.
