A slow day nudging our way through pack ice. The ship steadily persuading ice floes off to the side to allow our passage. It’s a game of both strategy and patience. Accompanying us on this voyage to Casey Station, as the Ice Pilot on the Happy Dragon, is Benoit Hebert, previous Master of L’Astrolabe and the Aurora Australis, he has over 35 voyages (and probably more like 40, but he’s being a tad modest) through the ice in this region. His experience and expertise are greatly welcome as we negotiate our way through this stretch of water.
Our ETA to Casey is still in the hands of the ice. We hope the ice, with a little more coaxing, will allow us out into the open water and onwards to Casey.
