With 1178t of cargo on board, the Happy Dragon threw off her bowlines and farewelled the Hobart wharf. But before steaming off to Casey, we have dropped anchor in the Derwent River to undertake practice trials with the ship and the barge that will be used to transport the cargo to Casey, as this is the first time that the Happy Dragon is being used by the Australian Antarctic program. This provides us opportunity to test our procedures before heading into the high seas of the Southern Ocean (which by all accounts, its sounds like we may encounter sooner rather than later) and the challenges of the icy continent. All on board are very enthusiastic to be heading south, as for many of the crew it's their first opportunity to visit Antarctica. Many thanks to all the AAD teams who have helped prepare us for this voyage and to the excellent collaboration with Big Lift Shipping. Fair winds and following seas to the Happy Dragon.
REGARDS: Anthea and Misty.
