Comments

Cargo operations have been humming along today. Fresh and frozen food is transported on the ship in specialised 20 foot containers called reefers. These containers are connected to power and can be set at different temperatures – a bit like your fridge at home. For the fresh (fruit and vegetables) food the temperature is set at +4 degrees and for frozen food the temperature is set to -18 degrees. It is quite a bit of work to empty these containers on the ship as it is to pack it away once it arrives on station. There is a great sense of satisfaction knowing that all of the station's food for the next year has been delivered.

For most of the day the LARCS have been moving cargo in both directions, ship to shore (ingoing cargo to station) and shore to ship (cargo returning to Australia – RTA). Being able to move cargo in both directions at once is an efficient way to unload and load the ship. The Deputy Voyage Leader keeps a close eye on these movements to ensure that the cargo goes in the correct direction.

We did have a hold up this morning for a short while as a cantankerous Gentoo penguin had set up camp in the middle of the one road that leads from station to shore stopping the LARC getting to the beach. Thankfully the penguin realised it was holding up our resupply and moved along.
