Comments

Today was another busy day on board as planning continued for a fly off operation. Teams met below to discuss search and rescue capacities, cargo discharge priorities and putting together documents relating to the use of helicopters off the back deck of the ship. While this was happening the MPV Everest moved into the ice to minimise the rolling which we had been experiencing during the morning. By being positioned in the ice the ship was more stable allowing the MPV Everest Deck to play giant container tetris. The crew reshuffled containers throughout the day, the goal – to move the barges and provide a clear area which would allow helicopter operations off the back deck.

Parking the ship in the ice not only provided the stability required for the crew, but also for expeditioners who ventured once more outside at the front of the ship to take in their surroundings. It wasn't just the expeditioners that were enjoying the warmer weather out on the ice floes were numerous seals and penguins enjoyed the rays of sunshine that broke through the clouds. A highlight for the day was watching a leopard seal stalk a small group of penguins sitting on an ice floe. From afar you could see the seal keeping an eye on the penguins as it basked in the sun making sure its feathered friends weren't on the move.

Tomorrow the planning will continue in preparation for when we start flying to Mawson.
