Comments

Yesterday we headed out of the ice pack and continued to stooge back and forth waiting for weather conditions to improve. While we waited the sea bird observing team continued with their work on the bridge. Sightings from the bridge were not only limited to the feathered variety with minke whales and seals being observed from up high.

Last night the wind howled around the vessel as we sat waiting just off the ice edge. At first light we again attempted to make our way through the ice pack. This morning we woke to good visibility, however the winds were still too high for a drone flight. The visibility was good enough and the Everest crew began gently nudging our way forward again. It then became apparent that this was not the lead we were looking for and once again we headed out back towards the ice edge.

The Voyage Management team, along with the members from Helicopter Resources, the ingoing Mawson Station Leader, Chef and Dr, the Watercraft Coordinator, the Bureau of Met (BOM) forecaster and observers, the Comms Operator and Refuel Coordinator are currently in the process of putting together plans for a Mawson fly off. From the people that need to go in through to what and how much cargo, every little detail is being considered.

Tomorrow, weather pending, we plan to put both helicopters in the air to look for leads so the MPV Everest can be manoeuvred closer towards Mawson to reduce the fly off distance.

REGARDS: Andy, Jenn and Lauren
