Last night we experienced a bit more rocking and rolling as the winds peaked at 60 knots. For those of us still on the bridge we sat in an eerie darkness, the ship's spot light illuminating the path ahead, as the ship pitched up and down with each set. Every so often a larger wave would be encountered, and as the ship came back down the bow would slam down creating a white spray which filled the air. By this morning the winds had abated, the sun was out, and we were back in calmer waters.
The highlight today on the MPV Everest was the opening of the Davis Post Office. A very, very eager crew member assisted the Post Mistress by locating and retrieving the post office stocks enabling the philatelic store to open. Many on board are avid stamp collectors while others like collecting the different post mark from each station. The shop first visited the Bridge where the crew got various items post marked with the Davis Station stamp. The Post Office then moved down to the mess where it was greeted by many an expeditioner and crew, keen to get their hands on Australia Post goodies and the Davis Station post mark for their collection. A big thank you from all on board to the Davis Post Mistress for being so accommodating.
On board the excitement is building as we make out final preparations for arrival at Davis. The bridge crew are inspecting charts to confirm our course into the Davis anchorage. The watercraft team are preparing and checking their equipment in readiness for work. Expeditioners sit watching the icebergs go by from the warmth of the bridge, whilst the voyage management team square away the last of the rosters and cargo plans. Our current arrival time to anchorage is sometime mid-day, Davis local time, tomorrow however this all depends on the ice which we are yet to encounter.
