This voyage to resupply the continental Antarctic research station Casey, is the first of the season, and the first aboard the multi-purpose vessel (MPV) Everest. At present, we are a little less than 24 hours sailing time from our point of departure in the Derwent, running on a South Westerly heading at a speed of 11kts on a mild swell below an overcast sky. After a busy pre-departure period, these conditions have afforded many of us a chance to gain our sea-legs and to familiarise ourselves better with this ship.
On the evening of the 7th, with all expeditioners embarked and the ship made ready, the Everest departed Macquarie Wharf for an anchorage in the Derwent off Taroona. There we completed two days of operational trials intended to test systems and equipment, and harmonise approaches to cargo, refuelling, watercraft operations and emergency response between AAD workgroups and the ship's crew. 'Time spent in rehearsal is seldom wasted' said a wise man once. After two days well spent in the Derwent the ship weighed anchor and we sailed for Casey.
To the task of resupplying Casey station, we welcome Master Jan Dobrogowski, and his crew aboard the MPV Everest. Following the completion of the crew's requisite self-isolation period, the Everest sailed from South Korea, taking on fuel in Burnie to reach Hobart in time to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks display from the ship's imposing heli-deck platform. The ship's crew remained aboard the Everest during the Hobart port-call, rigorously observing shipside COVID-19 protocols whilst readying her for sea. Throughout Christmas and New Year, our own contingent of 24 AAD expeditioners completed a precautionary self-isolation period, guests of Hobart's 'Old Woolstore' with the support of AAD head office staff. Throughout all stages of pre-departure and embarkation, the commitment of both groups to ensuring a 'COVID safe' environment on the ship and ultimately at station, has been exemplary.
Our thanks to all involved in the preparations and implementation of the voyage across the AAD, MCS and FOX Offshore, not least the Master and crew of the MPV Everest and expeditioners aboard.
Regards,
James, Jenn and Andy.
