We exited the band of fast ice at 0230 this morning. The 26km of icebreaking took around 12 hours, an average speed of about 2kph. I'm not sure how many rams were required but it would be quite a few.
The water even a few metres from the shore at Mawson is too deep to anchor so the ships officers and captain have to hold position using the main engines, bow and stern thrusters.
The IRB and Jet barge are both on the water and all of the ingoing winterers and a couple of key resupply support personnel have gone ashore to brief Mawsonites and to be briefed by the Station Leader.
The first cargo, the +4C Reefer (refrigerated container) is now ashore and cargo ops will soon ramp up to full speed.
It's great to be here, the Mawson winterers have been great folks to sail with and we wish them a safe winter here at Mawson.
Cheers
