Comments

Clocks were retarded one hour last night.

Another busy day planning for our arrival at Davis and then Mawson. This included the meeting to plan the meetings and then some of the planned meetings. We also have a schedule of briefings ready to start next week.
Hopefully they are brief...

The CPR (Continuous Plankton Recorder) was also swapped out with just a few centimetres left on the roll; a result of the 1 hour time change last night.

To explain, the CPR is a large metal box with fins on the back. It is dragged through the ocean about 100m below the surface. a propeller on the back drives two reels of fine mesh. Anything that comes in through the little hole in the tip is sandwiched between the mesh and wound onto a third roller, this is then stored in formaldehyde and unrolled on return, resulting in a record of plankton and phytoplankton along our track.

The Aurora has done around 3 Tasmania to Antarctica voyages towing CPR's every year since commissioning in 1991.
