Comments

It's a big ocean, but a small world: we passed within 6 NM of the Chinese Antarctic ship Xue Long II visible on the horizon yesterday afternoon at 15:00, with the other Chinese ship, Xue Long, visible on radar. Our captain and theirs exchanged "hello's" as we passed, like ships in the ... well, exactly like ships passing, really. This morning the ocean was strangely lake-like in its demeanour: no swell at all. That's changed a bit this afternoon, but it's a gentle swell, and a perfect re-introduction for us all to open water conditions. There are still some large tabular bergs about, and a multitude of growlers too, with all states of decay in between these ends of the iceberg spectrum.
