This morning, many of our expeditioners awoke to find the ship at anchor off Casey station. In the early hours of the morning the ship had made fine progress through the very obliging pack ice and across a large polynya – lined by towering icebergs reflecting the early morning light.
At anchor by 0700hs, crew and expeditioners saw to their respective tasks. The crew undertook a series of routine safety audits, drills, inspections and maintenance, whilst our expeditioner team was busy finalising plans, preparing watercraft and equipment, and attending final briefings. Meanwhile on station, expeditioners were busy attending to normal station functions and summer project work in addition to administering the departure of a traverse team off station and receiving two inbound aircraft whilst also finalising resupply activities – a busy day for them without doubt. Yet still their greeting party managed a smile and a warm hello as their inflatable dinghy touched the side of the Aurora a little after 1330hs this afternoon.
After a series of quick meetings, a plan for the afternoon was finalised and watercraft and refuel teams from the ship undertook preparatory boating and shore based activities with their station counterparts to enable the smooth commencement of cargo operations tomorrow (Saturday).
After the combined efforts of the station, ship's crew, expeditioners and head office personnel, and with a promising forecast given, we hope for a productive first day of cargo operations tomorrow.
Regards,
Management
