Mid this morning, the first iceberg was spotted far out on the horizon. Little more than a shimmering sliver of white against a brilliant blue sky, this 'first' iceberg of the voyage brought glory to Sam M, who, after scrupulous adjudication by a committee of honourable folk including our esteemed voyage management trainee, was awarded winner of the V2 Iceberg Sweep . Well done Sam.

Today more briefings have taken place on board for those ship's crew and expeditioners directly supporting the upcoming station refuel and cargo operations. Brad, our refuel supervisor and Mick, our watercraft coordinator have been especially busy, as rosters of expeditioners and crew rotate in and out of the D-Deck theatre to receive briefings and talk through the finer details of the operations. Meanwhile, those expeditioners travelling on from Casey to Davis have received instruction by the field training officers on aviation survival kits and protocols this afternoon.

An update from Robyn and Dagmar working up on the monkey deck .. 'to note it is getting very cold now doing the outside checks and lens cleaning – gloves, hats, and face masks needed! The sea-state cameras and Simon's camera were iced up this morning. We've been sampling baseline air of about 405ppm (that's about the lowest in the world) for most of the last couple of days. We're mostly sitting under low level cloud ~ 1km up – so it's pretty grey at the surface!'

This evening we look forward to a presentation by our resident composer Gordon H in the D-Deck theatre and tomorrow, all things going to plan we will be conducting an early morning retrieval (and deployment) of a whale mooring and not long afterwards, expect to encounter the sea ice edge.

Regards,

Voyage Management
