Our quick exit strategy from the pack ice came to a grinding halt yesterday afternoon as we encountered a heavy band of ice just south of the 65th parallel. After some poking and prodding, we decided to back track only to find that the channel that we had cut through the ice was now somewhat narrower than the ship. Clearly things were on the move; a fact subsequently made apparent when both the ice and the ship drifted one full mile to the north while we managed to get just 100 metres eastwards. But persistence pays off and we were soon on our way again, passing north of the point where we had been temporarily stuck on the way into Davis.
This morning, we are making good progress to the north-east through pack ice and scattered icebergs. More open water where swarms of krill might be found is not too far ahead.
