Another sunny day at Davis with the wind peaking at a paltry 7 knots. Last night some of the Davis winterers generously gave up their time to take some of the crew and round trippers across to Gardner Island where the local Adelie penguins are establishing their nests. There are few opportunities for ship based people to get far from the vessel during the entire voyage so it was much appreciated. Some Emperor penguins joined the group and some Weddell seals helped to complete the scene by hauling out onto the ice behind the ship.
It got down to -14 degrees overnight and this morning, the sea ice all around the ship is covered in small glinting crystals that make it seem as though the ice gnomes have been carelessly casting their diamonds about the place. At times like this you can pause to admire the wondrous beauty that nature provides...
...or you can just move more cargo.
