Cargo operations continued yesterday afternoon with the critical station and project cargo now completely discharged from the aft end. This included two large water tanks, along with a number of cage pallets to support the Station Modernisation project team who are looking at options to build a new station. The new station will continue year round presence into the future.
The current Macquarie Island Research Station was built in 1948 and has been operating continuously ever since.
In other project news, a number of round trip personnel have commenced work on station, including inspection and calibration of the geomagnetic pulsations magnetometer, and ongoing station remediation works. Project work also continues on-board the Aurora Australis, with the ARM project continuing on this voyage.
Today we have begun refuelling operations, with the aim to transfer up to 200,000 litres of special Antarctic blend (SAB) fuel to station. This will support the research station and project teams for another 12 months.
Cheers
Andy, Justin and Aron
