This morning we awoke to a light North Easterly casting a steady stream of ice-floes from the northern regions of the bay down and across the wharf approaches. On the western edges of the bay, the narrow northern edge of a slab of fast ice several hundred metres in length linking Kilby Island with the shoreline had finally broken away, leaving it only tenuously attached to the southern shoreline by a series of widening tide cracks. The watercraft team scrambled and quickly had an ice-rope (remember the barn door?) re-directed across the northern approach to the harbour, preventing any further flow towards the wharf. This left a western approach for the barge and the AAII manned by the ship's crew to clear, preventing further encroachment of the large floes.

The quick work by the teams in the boats to clear the wharf and its approaches led to a delay to cargo operations of only an hour or so and since then, cargo has flowed smoothly to shore with RTA (Return To Australia) items being back-loaded to the ship.

Following fast behind the first runs of cargo came the final tour group from station to visit the ship. Guest hosted by our refuelling supervisor the group took in the sights and sounds of at least 6 levels of the ship and 4 different types of fruit before returning to shore.

This afternoon we anticipate welcoming 5 new passengers from station to the ship who will return with us to Hobart. Once on board they will complete a series of ship and safety inductions before settling down to await the commencement of the return leg. We look forward to having them onboard.

We leave you now with Orlando's question of the day...'Is there a connection between compass and compassion?'

Kind regards,

James and Dave
