Successfully completed three Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT) deployments today in preparation for V2 when the RMT will be used to capture live krill. The testing enables both crew and AAD staff to reacquaint themselves with utilising this complex sampling tool. The forward CTD winch was also fully tested with the rosette down to 3,100 metres with all systems running smoothly. We also took the opportunity to deploy on the CTD rosette two acoustic releases which we triggered (released acoustically) whilst at depth, similar acoustic releases will be triggered throughout the season down South so todays test enables us to know that the ships acoustic trigger system is working. Later this this afternoon we will be testing the aft CDT winch. The aft CDT winch is a spare winch in case of failure with the forward CTD winch, it is very important that we take the opportunity to test this winch each season so that we know it is in good working order. Tomorrow will be a day of continuing CTD testing, RMT trawling and if time permits a new sampling trawl, an Isaac Kid trawl which is similar in size to the RMT. This trawl is a single wire trawl used commonly around the world for basic sampling, its beauty is that it is a single wire trawl so hopefully easy to deploy and retrieve.
