The weather has moderated today, but attempts to commence cargo from Buckles Bay were thwarted by residual southerly swell causing the ship to rock too much for safe Larc (Light Amphibious Resupply Craft) and crane operations. We had a Larc visit to try it out, but gave it away. So late this morning the Master bought us around to Hasselborough Bay on the opposite side of the Isthmus, where there is a long low SW swell but much more stable. Cargo Ops started in a civilised manner after lunch, and we are progressing well with discharge of all long bundles of roofing done, and we have started sending in concrete footings for the new boat shed. We are combining this with Return to Australia (RTA) back loading now that we have some space in the hold. Given the good conditions and late start we are looking to work late again today to make the most of it. All are doing well and we are appreciating the assistance of four summer trades with shipboard cargo operations this afternoon.
It pretty rare to have low swells on the Western side of this isthmus where the prevailing westerly storms of the roaring 40s and 50s usually dominate.
Cheers Don and Helen
