Another windy and rain filled morning this morning that was relished by our LARC team who commenced cargo operations from the ship in Buckles Bay. Soon conditions eased enough to transfer people for work ashore by the LARC and then a further weather improvement saw us recommence helicopter cargo operations. The crew of the Aurora are amazing at keeping the flow of cargo up to helicopters lifting loads off the deck every 2 minutes for hours at a time! By afternoon they were accepting cargo back on the deck to return to Australia. Ashore people are out in the field on science projects, living in the huts, while on station there is a hive of science and operational activity. The helicopters have just left to do the first down island flying this afternoon to familiarise the pilots with environmental factors such as wildlife concentrations and the LARC is just returning to the ship with passengers who are staying on Hotel Aurora. It's a great view from the ship now with the plateau clear but under a grey sky, waterfalls tumbling down, penguins in the water and albatross and giant petrels soaring.
Cheers,
Robb, Nicki, Aaron and Eliza.
