Comments

We are once again well and truly in the open sea. Our taste of sea ice lasted until midafternoon yesterday. It was great to see but now it is open water with the occasional iceberg.

There is an underway data system that the AAD Science Technical Support Section have developed that provides a wide range of data collected from an array of sensors on the ship. It shows weather and navigation information amongst a raft of other data.

One navigational screen I particularly like to view is the Navigational Chart – this shows the ship's position and the voyage track. Our voyage track looks pretty cool starting with the curved course we took when we left Tassie – this was to scoot around a storm that was heading for us. We then made a bee line for Mawson only to be halted by rougher seas (yep another storm)and an awesome snow fall a few days before our target. There are lots of 'back and forth' tracks showing us 'stooging' waiting for an opportunity to go into Mawson and commence operations. Then it was to Davis, then Mawson, then back to Davis. We have a couple of squiggly lines yesterday as we were moving around most of the pack ice. From here on in it is probably going to be a reasonably straight line back to Hobart.

Clocks forward 1 hours last night – now 3 hours behind Hobart time.

Cheers
Leanne, Simon and Amy
