The discharge of the Grove crane from the ship went very smoothly yesterday. All involved in the process did an excellent job – it is all about planning, communication and execution and that worked to a tee for this operation.

All Mawson cargo is ashore and now loading Mawson cargo to the vessel is underway. This game of tetris is fun to watch. I get to watch it from the warmth of the bridge listening to all of the radio calls as decisions are made on what piece of cargo is required next and the rejigging of where items will be stowed if it does not fit. This game maximises what can fit on the ship and leaving the space to load Davis cargo when we get there. Today is a little warmer than previous days but it is pretty cold by Hobart standards.

Yesterday a team of scientists travelled via IRB to Verner, Petersen and Welch Islands to download and maintain cameras set up on the islands. It was also possible to swing by Bechervaise Island to collect some of the scientists gear that was left on the island when we picked them up a few days ago.

The wind is very light which has enabled the scientists to head off to Rookery Islands to download and maintain the cameras on those islands. It is amazing how much can be done when the weather plays nicely.

Now operations have set into a rhythm we have the opportunity for crew and roundtrip personnel to visit the station. It is great to be able to make this happen and I appreciate the station for enabling these visits.

Once again we have a magic day here. I was lucky enough to get ashore for a couple of hours this morning to speak with the outgoing and ingoing Station Leaders and have a quick look around. I feel privileged to have had that opportunity as Mawson is a pretty special place.

Cheers
Leanne, Simon and Amy
