Our hope was that we would be transiting through Iceberg Alley this morning with an arrival at Mawson sometime this afternoon/evening. As with all best laid plans we are dependent on the weather and if it agrees with our plans. On this occasion it decided that Mawson was not the place for us today so we are 'stooging' out to sea waiting for the opportunity to get into Iceberg Alley and then Mawson. If you look at our ship track on the AAD internet site it almost looks like we are zig zagging our way to Mawson.
The ocean is much calmer today and it is a lot more comfortable on the ship than yesterday. If the weather gods play the game it is looking like we may be at Mawson on Saturday morning. Please do not hold me to that.
We are receiving two Mawson forecasts and one ship forecast each day along with other weather data the ship receives to help us to maximise our opportunities when they arise. The Bureau of Meteorology do a fantastic job by providing support to our Antarctic Operations.
Last night presentations once again met all expectations. We had a 15 minute video by our plant operator on Voyage 1 Resupply to Davis in 2015/16. I was particularly interested to see that as I was on the voyage. I spend resupply on board the ship so it was great to see some of the shore side activities. The second presentation was by our Voyage Management trainee on CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservations of Marine Living Resources). She explained how CCAMLR came about, what they do and its linkages to other international Antarctic groups such as the Antarctic.
Cheers
