We headed off on our voyage to Mawson at 5pm last night. It was lovely that some of the passengers on the cruise ship at the next berth waved us goodbye.

The first Continuous Plankton Recorder was deployed at 8am this morning and will be towed behind the ship collecting plankton and other exciting creatures. After approximately 450 nautical miles it will be pulled from the water, the samples removed, a new cassette put in and then deployed once again. We are hoping to do this 6 times before getting to Mawson.

Most expeditioners have been up and about but we are taking it a little easy today getting accustomed to our new 'rolling' environment. The ship is taking a more southerly track to avoid as much of the unpleasant weather as possible that is headed our way.

A big thank you to all involved in the port call and getting the ship away last night. There is an amazing amount of work that goes into a port call and all efforts are greatly appreciated.

Happy Australia Day
Leanne, Simon and Amy
