Comments

We arrived at the SOTS mooring at around 1am this morning and have been able to contact it with the pingy machine. We are now trying to hook it with a grapple line to drag it onboard.

The scientists have been busy packing up their equipment and the CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth) has been stripped down to a bare frame.

The CTD is a rosette shaped frame which has a bunch of instruments and bottles strapped to it. The bottles (it can carry 24 in total) go down open and are closed at various depths as they come back up, capturing the water at the depth they are closed at.

In addition to the conductivity, temperature and depth sensors the CTD rosette has an ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler), a flourometer, transmittance sensor (measures water clarity), oxygen sensor and a sensor that measure sunlight.

In all the CTD has completed 73 trips, travelled 158 km and collected 15000L of water. The oceanography team has analysed 920 dissolved oxygen and 970 salinity samples. The carbon team have collected 1000 CO2 samples and collected and analysed 1000 alkalinity samples.

Cheers

Andy, Mike and the really cool CTD dudes!
