We left the Ninnis Polynya after a day of non stop CTD's. The weather
was calm cloudless and windless. Beautiful coast line with glaciers and
the plateau rising behind vertical dolerite cliffs.
The exit proved easier than expected in part because we left early,
rather than risk having the wind turn and push the thick multi year fast
ice to our east across the entrance.
We are now doing our last ice station on an ice floe about half a
kilometre from the ship, deploying the team with the Inflatable Rubber
Boats (IRB). It takes 3-4 IRB loads to get the team and all their
equipment to the floe and back again with a big bag being used to lift
cargo in and out of the small watercraft.
After the ice station we will continue north to the Mertz Trough
transect of CTD's.
Cheers
Andy and Mike
