Yesterday afternoon we attempted another ice station using the Inflatable Rubber Boats (IRB'S) in a pond behind a reasonable size iceberg. It was also a failure. Currents and eddies kept moving the ice around and good floes to sample were hard to find. We eventually gave up and continued east overnight towards the Mertz area.
Third time lucky as a plethora of good floes has been found in a wide, open lead about 50nm north of the Mertz Glacier tongue.
We are lifting the boats onboard now, after successfully sampling the floe, ready to head further south and begin CTD's.
Cheers
