The weather and strong winds that caused us to leave Casey overnight during the resupply a few days ago have compressed the band of pack ice around this part of Antarctica so the 40 miles has become only 30, however it is much denser, more rafted and compact. As a result we are sitting with engines off to preserve fuel, and the trace metals team are sampling the ice off the bow and upwind of the ship instead. We hope that the pack will loosen tomorrow and we will be able to continue to open water soon.
Cheers
