Refuelling went well until three or four large pieces of pack ice drifted into the hose around 1am this morning. The standby barge team was called to assist and the last piece pushed free of the ice a few minutes before pumping stopped as the last tank ashore was full.
As the hose was being packed up, weather suddenly deteriorated over a period of a few seconds and the winds switched from calm to gusts up to
40 kts (75kmh) coming from all directions. We quickly left Newcomb Bay for open water.
As quickly as it started, a lull appeared and after 30 min of consistently calmer winds we ran the barge and a couple of small boat transfers to bring essential personnel back to the ship.
We are now stooging at sea waiting for the weather to improve so we can recommence cargo operations.
The final figure for fuel transferred to Casey was about 5,500ltr short of a million litres.
Cheers
